Widyawan obtained his Master of Laws degree (Sarjana Hukum) from Universitas Indonesia in 1977.

Following completion of his Bachelor of Laws degree from Universitas Indonesia in 1976, he joined the Legal Aid Institute (Lembaga Bantuan Hukum) Jakarta, and resigned in October 1978 before joining Unocal Indonesia as in-house counsel in November 1978. In 1983 Widyawan was appointed as General Counsel for Indonesia by Unocal Indonesia until he joined Del Juzar & Wiriadinata as Lead Partner in 1991, This firm was then re-established as Wiriadinata & Widyawan. In August 2005, Widyawan, together with Gatot Triprasetio and Anhar Rivai, formed the new firm Widyawan & Partners.

As Senior Partner of Widyawan & Partners, Widyawan is responsible for supervising and coordinating all legal works conducted by the firm, in addition to directly advising and assisting clients.

Widyawan's specialisations include all aspects of energy, infrastructure and financing of projects in Indonesia, including power, toll road, drinking water, ports and telecommunications. Widyawan also has experience with a variety of complex infrastructure projects involving electricity, oil and gas, general mining and geothermal in Indonesia. Widyawan has assisted clients in numerous merger and acquisition, public offering and restructuring transactions.

Widyawan is a member of PERADI (Indonesian Advocate Association), Assosiasi Konsultan Hukum Indonesia (AKHI) (Indonesian Bar Association for Legal Consultants), Himpunan Konsultan Hukum Pasar Modal (HKHPM) (Association of Capital Market Legal Consultants), Jakarta Lawyers Club, Law Association For Asia and The Pacific (Lawasia), and Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA).
